A Visit from John Nash and a Tribute to Edgar Dang

Today a friend John Nash from the bay area stopped by our workshop. We had been in touch and wanted to meet and talk. Crazy thing happened today that affected both of us, our friend Edgar Dang of Aloha Warehouse in San Francisco passed away. John was telling me how he bought this Kanile’a from Edgar. I suggested we tribute a song to him on it. I really valued Edgar as one of the few true enthusiast. He was genuinely passionate about having quality ukes and there is only a few people I share this bond with. He was a really nice man and he left us way too soon.

This is an original composition by John.

Mahalo for tuning in. This one is in honor our our friend and a great business parter, Edgar Dang. A Hui Ho Edgar! Our thoughts are with your ohana.

  1. Those of us who know Edgar are devastated. I visited him all the time at Aloha Warehouse and several of my friends and I attended a local monthly kanikapila where he was a fixture. He was a great spirit and very generous with his time, knowledge, and wisdom. I often sent friends to Aloha Warehouse for ukuleles, and they all told me that he was incredibly patient with them and always steered them toward an ukulele that was best for them. The Bay Area is filled with people who have bought ukuleles from Edgar. My ukulele meetup group, the San Francisco Ukulele Rebellion, is considering a way to pay tribute to him at our next meeting. I know that the local kanikapila won’t be the same without him. Thanks to you and John for posting this lovely tribute to him.

  2. I’m sorry that I only got to meet Edgar once. But I will always remember how generous he was with his time and his passion for ukulele was undeniable. Nice tribute John.

  3. Big thank you to Andrew and The Ukulele Site for the opportunity to share some of my music and also to all the family and friends of Edgar, my heartfelt condolences. The handful of times I got to see Edgar and talk ukuleles with him they were always memorable and full of joy. His presence will be missed here in the Bay Area and to the ukulele community at large.

Mahalo Leah. Let me know if I can ever help. Aloha Warehouse is the Hawaiian store in San Francisco. Something pretty special.

  4. Uncle Edgar took me in as family. I remember bringing my Lanikai ukulele then and getting fixed for a strap button. I remember him reassuring me that it would be okay drilling a hole into my ukulele but it would help since i perform on a regular basis. I always went into Aloha Warehouse to learn more about ukuleles and music. He supported me and pushed me to be a better musician. I play a custom Kanile’a ukulele because of him. He taught me everything I know about my instrument and he helped my create this masterpiece. I will miss him dearly and will continue to share his love for music with others the way he did with all of us.

  5. Mahalo for this beautiful tribute to my dad. His legacy will live on through the many folks he touched & his presence will never be forgotten.

  6. To Leah, Cidney, and family,
Your brother and father Edgar was so kind to me as a beginner to ukuleles, I won’t forget his kindness and
smile and patience. My heart is with you at this sad time. I won’t forget him.

  7. Those of us who know Edgar are so shocked to hear of his passing. I am so sorry for your loss and ours too. Edgar will be missed. He came to a lot of the kanikapila’s I participated in. I saw him at Saichi Kawahara’s Annual Fund Raiser and last on my way to JCCCN christmas recital. I still can’t believe that he is gone.
